It is with a heavy heart that I announce to you all the passing of advocate and writer, Steve Silberman on 8/28/2024. As many of you know, Silberman was the author of NeuroTribes: The Legacy of Autism and the Future of Neurodiversity, a groundbreaking book that has profoundly impacted our understanding of autism and the broader neurodivergent community.
Silberman’s work extended far beyond writing; he was a tireless advocate for the Autistic community, providing, often for the first time, a platform for the voices of those of us who for so long had our voices downplayed or silenced. Through NeuroTribes, he brought to light the rich history of autism, challenged the stigma surrounding it, and advocated for a more inclusive society that embraces neurodiversity. His meticulous research and compassionate storytelling not only educated the public but also empowered many within the Autistic community to embrace their identities, adding credibility and power to the Autistic rights movement of the 1990’s.
The legacy Silberman leaves behind is vast. He played a crucial role in shifting the narrative around autism from one of deficiency to one of diversity. His work has inspired countless individuals, including self-advocates, parents, professionals, and allies, to rethink their perceptions and to work towards a world that truly values and supports Autistic individuals.
As we reflect on Silberman’s contributions, it’s important to remember that his work continues through each of us who have been touched by his words and advocacy. Let us honor his legacy by continuing to push for a world where all neurodivergent individuals are recognized, respected, and given the space to thrive. Together, we can carry forward the mission that Silberman so passionately dedicated his life to.
