Research Study Description

About the Study:
The purpose of this study is to better understand African American parents’ experiences, challenges, and successes related to child feeding and managing mealtimes when raising an African American child (4-17 years old) with ASD. Insights from this study will be used to inform culturally competent nutrition education and support programs that can be shared with communities nationwide.

Why This Study Matters:
Mealtime can be a meaningful, yet challenging part of family life — especially for parents of children with ASD. By participating, families will have the opportunity to share their strategies for supporting healthy eating and family well-being.

What Participation Involves :
All participation will take place online. Families will be compensated for their time and effort.
1. Two online interviews via Zoom (one lasting 1 hour, and one lasting 30–45 minutes)
2. Complete a brief survey and a photo-elicitation activity (sharing photos related to mealtime experiences)

Participants must:
Identify as African American
Be a parent or caregiver (18 years or older) of a child aged 4-17diagnosed with autism
Live in the United States
Speak English
Have access to a computer, tablet, or smartphone with internet
Be willing to provide informed consent

Individuals cannot participate if:
They do not have a child with ASD between ages 4-17
They have a cognitive impairment that makes participation difficult
