Research Study Description

We invite autistic adolescents ages 13 to 21 and a parent to participate in a survey-based study to better understand the mental health and masking of autistic adolescents with and without autistic parents. By understanding these relationships, our goal is to help inform how we support autistic adolescents and their families. This study is being conducted as part of the doctoral dissertation of Melissa Lazo (Co-Investigator) under the supervision of Dr. Thomas Schanding (Principal Investigator) at the University of British Columbia. This study has received ethical approval from the University of British Columbia.

What does the study involve?
– A 10-minute online survey completed by a parent.
– A 15-minute online survey completed by an autistic adolescent/youth ages 13 to 21 years.
– A 5-minute Zoom video call prior to survey completion to verify participant identities and reconfirm consent.

Who can participate?
– Both a parent and autistic adolescent/youth must participate in the study.
– Adolescent/Youth must 1) be 13 to 21 years old, 2) have an autism diagnosis, 3) live in Canada, the USA, England, or Australia, and 4) not have a history of intellectual disability.
– Parent must live with the child a minimum of 3 days per week. Autistic and non-autistic parents can participate.

Will there be compensation?
– Families will have the opportunity to enter a draw for a chance to win one of 10 $50CAD e-gift cards to thank you for your time.

What if I have questions?
– Please contact Melissa Lazo (Co-investigator; [email protected]) and/or Dr. Thomas Schanding (Principal investigator; [email protected]).
