ATTENTION PARENTS AND ADULT FAMILY MEMBERS OF CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (CWASD):
I am conducting research as part of the requirements for a Doctor of Philosophy, Communication, Digital Media & Journalism at Liberty University. The purpose of the study is to explore the concern for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the information communication technology (ICT) used to help families communicate with them. Specifically, how speech tablets assist the interpersonal communication of CwASD. The theory guiding this study is the Social Information Processing Theory (SIP). The SIP theory discusses how communicators use text-based computer-mediated communication (CMC) to create interpersonal impressions and relationships. SIP theory explains how aspects of the communication process interact with technology to promote the development of empathy and attraction in online environments. It has been used to understand online impressions and relationship creation across many social and task contexts.
To participate, you must be 18 years of age or older and be a family member of a CwASD who uses a speech tablet for communication in everyday life. Participants will be asked to participate in an audio-recorded interview and a potential audio-recorded follow-up interview if needed. Participants will also be asked to review their interview transcripts for both interviews. Initial interviews are expected to take approximately 1 hour, and the follow-up interview is expected to take 15-30 minutes. If you would like to participate and meet the study criteria, please get in touch with me to schedule an interview at [email protected]. A study information sheet will be sent to you via email.
