Current research indicates that there is a genetic foundation for AS, involving a number of different genes. There is some suggestion that environmental factors may play a part in causing some types of AS, or may affect the expression of the AS genes. There may also be a spontaneous gene mutation which causes AS in some individuals. At present, however, there is no definitive research that confirms non-genetic causes.
